Installing Windows XP

I just purchased Windows XP Full Retail

I would like to wipe my hard drive clean and start from scratch my question is do I have to fdisk and partition the old fashioned way or will the disk do everything for me?

Thanks

Hi,

no, the old fashioned way with fdisk and format is just for Windows 95, 98 and ME.

With Windows 2000 and XP you just boot from the CD. Windows Setup will start and after a couple minutes you will get a screen where you can delete existing partitions, create new partitions, and format them. Basically it has the functions that old fdisk and format had, but they're included in the setup routine so you don't execute them separately.
Also, only that way you can format your hard drive with NTFS.

If you go with multiple partitions you only have to create the one for the OS and install, the rest can be done later from within Windows using Disk Management.
