Hi elmoes

If you have a SoundBlaster Live! card in your system, this fix might work for you. It's a cut-and-paste from Dell support:
-----------------------
"Could not install Service Vectors"

The error occurs due to insufficient available Interrupt Requests (IRQs) to install the SoundBlaster Emulation. In order to provide compatibility for older DOS-based applications, Creative installs a driver that emulates the original SoundBlaster sound card. This device appears as Creative SB Live! SB16 Emulation in the Device Manager.

If you have added additional hardware to your computer that requires IRQs, your computer may not be able to reserve an IRQ for the SB Live! SB16 Emulation on shutdown.

If you do not have any older MS-DOS software, such as a game, that requires sound in MS-DOS only, you can disable the SB16 Emulation in the Device Manager.

Solution

To disable Creative SB Live! SB16 Emulation, perform the following steps:

Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
The Control Panel window appears.
Double-click the System icon.
Click the Device Manager tab.
Click the plus (+) sign beside the Creative Miscellaneous Devices entry.
Double-click Creative SB Live! SB16 Emulation.
The Creative SB Live! SB16 Emulation Properties window appears.
Near the bottom, click the checkbox next to Disable in this hardware profile to place a check in it.
Click OK.
The System Properties window reappears.
The icon beside Creative SB Live! SB16 Emulation should appear to have a red x on it. This indicates that it has been disabled.
The error message will no longer appear.
---------------------------------
If that's not it, or doesn't help, post again & let us know.
Best of luck
. . . Gary

Hello Gary

Thank you so much for the reply back and your time and effort in helping me solve a few pc problems.
I decided to disable the SB16 Emulation, and also had a look at the link you posted.

cheers

Glad to help.

Sometimes resolving the sound drivers helps with the shutdown, sometimes not. I'll check back at your other thread (the "shutdown" one) & see if you had success with aumha's shutdown troubleshooter. It's a time-consuming hunt, but definitely worth it when things finally go well.

Hello gary..

I found the problem that my programs were running slow and that my pc would not shut down or restart normally.

I Intalled a Surecom Network card model EP320xr.

I need a network card for the internet and maybe this was not compatible with my pc.

Would i be best installing an aAdapter in usb port , or trying other Pci Network card. I need it for ADSl As im no longer going to be using dial up for my internet.

cheers

Hi again

3 possibilities:

1) Your motherboard isn't PCI 2.2 compliant, and isn't supplying the 3.3v of power that the adapter needs. Here's a quote from the Surecom forum:
---------
"Please first note that the EP-320XR-1/8A only supports and sources 3.3V power voltage from PCI bus.
Therefore, it is better to use this network adapter on recent PCI rev. 2.2 mainboards which have provide the 3.3V voltage on PCI slots. And, you could not use this network adapter on pretty old PCI rev. 2.0 and old PCI rev. 2.1 mainboards which do not provide the 3.3V voltage on PCI slots."
------------
(The fractured English is courtesy of the Taiwan site) from their thread http://202.181.138.74:8001/auth/phpB...opic.php?t=421

2) Your motherboard is compatible, but you just needed some patching of Win98 first.

If by any chance you happenned to install the Win98 shutdown patch as part of your shutdown troubleshooting, you can try Completely uninstalling your SureCom & then reinstalling it. To completely uninstall it, boot into Safe Mode [you can press F8 as the computer is starting to get there], and go to "Device Manager" [Start/Settings/Control Panel/System/Device Manager] and remove the adapter from there [click on the plus sign next to Network Adapters, then click on your Surecom to highlight it, then click on Remove], then try a run of RegClean 4.1 (Microsoft updated version 4.1 to work with Win98 http://download.com.com/3000-2094-88...ml?tag=lst-0-1 --details on how to use it are in the ReadMe.txt file), then reinstall the drivers on restart. This try is suggested by the mods on a Surecom forum http://202.181.138.74:8001/auth/phpB...opic.php?t=387

3) Your motherboard, your patch of Windows, and the card are compatible, but you need a better driver - or there's a conflict with another card in your system.

If you think that perhaps it's an issue of the wrong drivers, or you want to try a patch for that model, you can try the link below. Your drivers are the file ep320xr.exe, the patch is exchk70.exe
http://www.surecom-net.com/support/d...vs.htm#Adapter

If you look in Device Manager and see red Xs or yellow exclamation marks, post that info here & we'll take it from there.
===============
That said, I have Linksys cards in older AT systems with no problems at all, and they go on sale for $5 every now and then. Might be worth the $5 or $10 bucks to skip the Surecom & try a different card.

Best of luck

Hi again

Two quick questions:
1) Does the computer shut down normally with no network cards installed?
2) Do you still have the emulation turned off for the SoundBlaster?

If the emulation for SoundBlaster is back on, try turning it off again & see if that helps. Or if the emulation is already off, try seeing if the pc shuts down normally without a network card installed. That should make it easier to troubleshoot.

If the pc shuts down normally without a network card in, try reinstalling the new network card in a different slot. But just before installing, boot into Safe Mode and make sure that no devices are listed that are no longer present. Remove any extras. Then try another run of RegClean, then reinstall the new card in the different slot.

If none of these help, there is a good troubleshooter for Win98 shutdown problems http://www.aumha.org/win4/a/shutdown.htm. One of the solutions at that site is a shutdown patch. It may be that the Shutdown patch for Win98 will help you, maybe not. They have many suggestions for things to look for.

Best of luck

Glad it's working, I was running out of ideas

I think you'll enjoy the world of high-speed Internet access - it's so quick compared to alternatives it's spooky. (& Holloween's coming up!)
