Only if it needs it, and only if the applications you are running needs it. Otherwise it sits unused.
BTW in order to run Win9x with more than 512 installed, a minor tweak needs to be applied. As well, there are sometimes stability issues between 768 and a gig. What are you running that needs that much ram? |

I can't think of any reason you would need that much rem with W98, I know of no application that would require that much, also if there is something that comes up that requires mor ram, it will automaticaly use the swap file and hard drive as virtual memerey.

Your system won't be any faster if you had 512MB or 1GB, because there is no application that requires you to have 1GB of RAM.

So 1gb of RAM wouldn't help in gaming? That's all I do with the PC. Thanks for the replys!

some of the things that will help in gamming are:
1. a faster cpu 2. a faster motherboard and ddr ram 3. a high speed cable connection 4. a video card that enhances gamming, with high speed ddr memory 5. a faster data flow from the hard drive |

But if you ever put it in a dual boot system, there is a little bit of an edit you have to do in the system.ini

Here's my system:
AMD XP2100 OC'ed to 2.133 Ghz 512 MB PC2100 ASUS TI4200 OC'ed 290/620 Epox 8K9AI MBoard 2 Maxtor 40gb in RAID 0 The other night I ran across some more PC2100/512MB for only $50.00. So I thought I would ask. I know in WIN XP the 1GB of RAM might be useful. I know this is off the subject, but do you think the RAID helps? While you are gaming is the harddrive even being used? Thanks for answering my dumb questions.

raid will not help you at all, even going to a serial hard drive will not help a great deal, but not being a gamer, don't take what I say as the only answere.

Well I only paid $21 for my RAID card and the other Maxtor 40gb I dug out of the dumpster at work. They decided to upgrade all of our computers, so after work I went dumpster diving, good learning computers, and one was a Pentium 133 with that Maxtor 40gb 7200rpm. Hell that's a $60 drive. I would call that a succesful dive! Thanks for your help.

Ray hit the nail on the head. With my dual boot, XP/98se, I run 1Gb of Kingston HyperX. (Just cuz I had the $, and I wanted to!) Works great with the XP, but had to change some things for the 98 to run right.
