Shutdown and XP reinstall
Hi Folks
Like quite a few, I have problems with my system not responding when I want to shut down. The only way that I can accomplish it is to go Cont-Alt-Del and log off as a user, and then shut down. I have tried most of the things suggested, ie System restore, checked that most drivers are current, all to no avail. The system shuts down ok from safe mode. Question is - will reinstalling XP on top of the current version do any good (presuming this is possible) and if so can I do this without affecting my other programs and files? Or does anyone have any other suggestions that I can try first?

Hi Basil,
First, look through this Windows XP Shutdown Troubleshooter and see if you can find a fix to your specific problem. If not, you can do a repair (an option when running setup) which will reinstall Windows but leave your files intact. |

Thanks for that guys.
I went down the MSConfig route, disabling the various startup items and found that there was one item that was causing the problem. I have now disabled it. The 'offending' item was ccApp - which was under Program Files\common Files\Symantec Shared\ccApp.exe. This obviously emanates from Norton Anti virus, and presumably whilst disabled, NAV is not working? Any further suggestions please? |
