My boss got into a website that changed his home page to the URL of the website. No big deal to go into options and change the homepage back, but when the pc is turned off and then back on the URL is changed back to the unwanted website. It even put itself into startup in msconfig, were I have deselected it, but to no avail. How can I stop this from coming up every time the pc is turned on? (win 98se)

I have run spy bot and it took a lot of stuff out, but I'm still having the same problem. I think I need to find it in my registry somewere and remove it, but I'm not sure were to look.

When you ran Search & Destroy, did you use the latest definitions? . . . and be sure to let it fix just about everything it finds.
You may want to run a full system anti-virus scan as well. I'd highly recommend it. An excellent online resource is the HouseCall online scan at TrendMicro's site - it is always up-to-date, and might find something your regular program isn't: http://housecall.trendmicro.com Also, look in on your Startup programs. Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Information . . . in the left-hand window, click on the plus (+) sign next to "Software Environment", then on "Startup". The programs will list in the right-hand window. The 2nd column will tell you where they are starting from [the column is titled "Called From"]. The main areas are the Registry [usually HKEY_Local_Machine/Software/Microsoft/Windows/Current Version/Run & also RunServices & from Current User, etc], your .ini files from a load= command, and from shortcut icons in the Startup folder in your Start/Programs menus. Look for the hijakker in those places, remove the reference, and it shouldn't be a problem anymore. Best of luck . . . Gary [p.s. if you haven't edited your Registry before, and you have questions, post your questions & we'll see how it goes] |
