Reinstalling XP Question
OK this is a long story for a short question?...Recently my friend's system caught a virus after it was cleaned, the operating system (XP Home) was producing a number of errors. After some feeble attempts to restore it, we opted to just wipe it out and start fresh. Once we reformatted the hard rive the operating system would not install. During the installation process I can get it to where it says "Installing Devices" then it just restarts and continues this in an endless loop. After replacing every part of the system, even the case. I finally tried installing my OS and it installed flawlessly.
I have no idea why his OS will not work, but it just doesn't. I have examined it for scratches, and it seems clean to me. I can only assume from this that his copy has an error not visible to the naked eye. Is there a way to get it exchanged from Microsoft, or New Egg? Heck or if you have any ideas how I can get it to install that would be great to!!! Thanks comosum |

I'm sure you have cleaned the cd. Contact Microsoft and see what they have to say, I know they will replace bad cd's, but I don't know the procedure.

Hi Comosum, if I remember right, during the early part of the installing process, winXP says something like, "Do you want to write over the installation configuration files, or folder?" If you say YES, then the whole thing just starts all over, to create installation config file......... an endless loop. It may be that when reinstalling winXP over a previous copy, it expects to see the old folder. Next time, just say no, dont write over it. I think right after that, theres a tricky time to actually remove the CD to finish the install.
Hey, if I'm wrong, what have you got to lose.... just one more Fisk & Format, right. Topper |

if you Friend has the license key and they registered with Microsoft then you can get them to exchange the CD or just burn him a copy of your CD as long as he uses his license no its perfectly legal

Topper : Actually we reformatted the hard drive all together due to the virus and lingering errors. So there shouldn't be any previous copies installed.
andyms18a: The only problem is I have XP pro and his is XP Home? Thx for the help though?.. Has anyone seen a contact e-mail at Microsoft for software exchanges? comosum |

Hey Comosum..... No, what I mean is, as you start the install process, winXP creates install config files, then asks you if you want to delete or write over the files, just in case its a reinstall your doing. If you say no, then the install continues until finished, bye

Just go to the hard drive manufacturers website and get a utility to write zeros to the front of the drive or the whole thing, and everything XP had written to the drive will be gone.
