Manualy removing drivers in XP

Hi
I'm sure everyone has had this problem at one time or another.

you install something, find better drivers but the ' update driver' will not recognize the new drivers unless it was a fresh install.
So you try uninstalling the old drivers but the system refreshes, finds the device and assgins the same system drivers to the device before you get a chance to install the updated.

Bah!

I tried deleting the listed driver files but they come back. Any thoughts?!

Can't say that I've seen this before. What is that you're trying to install? Have you tried it from safe mode?

it will re-install if you boot, shouldn't if you have new driver saved then un-install old driver and install new driver without re booting,at least it doesn't in my limiited experience.

good point about safe mode. Its been so long since my PC has crashed, Ive forgotten it exists! I'll keep that in mind for next time as I think rafteros trick worked.
Thanks guys
