Cool

When I built this new one and went from WIN98 to XP I just backed up my data to CD's using Nero. I then did a clean install of XP, reloaded application programs on new PC and pointed to CD to restore. I didn't have any big music files or anything like that on my "C" drive. I had a lot of pictures and stuff that was on a seperate drive that I just moved over.

If you are talking about currently having just one drive and want to back it up, then easiest way would be to get another drive that is equal or larger than your current one and use something like Ghost to clone the drive. Or you could back up your data, music, and pictures to CD's using Nero if it isn't too large.
Chas

Personally I would back things up and do a clean install. I would not upgrade ME to XP.

Cheers have done that.

What are your reasons for a clean install and not just an upgrade? The reason i'm asking is we have recently upgraded the comps at work from ME to XP as well without a clean install and wondered if there was any possible problems with it?

Cheers

I tried to do an upgrade on mine... tried about 6 or 7 times... what a nightmare... the closest I got to everything working was when I got no errors during the upgrade, all the programs ran fine... BUT... I couldn't install or uninstall anything. After all those attempts... it was painfully obvious I would have wasted less time by backing up, formatting and reloading.

I see no reason to leave lingering traces of a prior OS. These take the form of registry entries that point to nothing and getting rid of empty or not needed files/folders taking up space.

I also think it makes for a better running PC to wipe the HD and start over with a clean install every couple of years. This might not be as critical with a NT based kernel OS like WIN2000 and XP as it is with the 9X kernel.
