The command to do that is "unset local_echo"

To get a list of options you can set and unset, type "set ?" and "unset ?"

i typed that, and it said local echo off, but i still see what i type. doesn't local echo turn off the ability to see what you type. reason being, i use this to check my email and i don't want people to see my password. thanks

That's bizarre, it worked for me. After typing "unset local_echo", I accessed a POP3 server and my typing was invisible. Don't get why it isn't working for you.

just out of curiosity, did you do this on a 2000 system or an xp system? doesn't matter, but when i typed that help command, it gave me a different format for local echo.

I did this on a 2000 system, actually. So, local_echo has been replaced with localecho?

yeah, but obstensibly, even after typing "unset localecho" it should still work, i wonder why it would not. wonder if there are any other xp users that have this problem. thanks for the help.

local echo gives you the ability to see what it is that you are typing in a telnet session. if local echo is off, you cannot see what you are typing. in my case, i am using telnet to connect to check my email. when i type my username and password, i would prefer that people do not see what it is that i am typing. by turning local echo off, people can't be snooping and see your password. hope that answers your question

Okay, I just tried telnet on Windows XP, and it doesn't seem to work either. It's got to be a problem with telnet itself under Windows XP. Bummer.

yeah, that is a bummer, but it makes me feel better knowing that it is an xp issue and not issue with me. thanks

That should be simple. All you would need to do is get a copy of telnet.exe from Windows 2K (in the %windir%\System32 directory). I don't have access to Windows 2K at the moment, so perhaps you can get it elsewhere.
