I have an old Gateway, PIII 1Ghz 512 PC133 WinME, and when I restart it, it takes like 5 minutes to restart. The screen goes black except for a white horizontal cursor in the top left of the screen. Also when I select shut down it shuts down like normal. Turns off immediately. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
TIA |

1st off, I'd run AV, and check for spyware. When did this started happening? Did you install any new software / hardware? Did you d/l any new files? When was the last time you checked the drive for errors and defragged? Do you know what programs load during startup?

If I remember correctly, Gateway computers came with McAfee which can also do this sort of thing.

Thanks for your replys.
I downloaded and ran Ad-Aware and it did find alomost 100 files. I've ran Defrag and did a thorough scan disk. I noticed this after I did the Windows update from Microsoft. I no longer have any virus protection software of any kind. After startup I hit ctrl alt delete and only Explorer is there. I also went to msconfig and unchecked every start up item. Nothing seems to make a difference. |

I wonder if it could be related to something like GoBack or System Restore. Sometimes when you are restarting, as opposed to shutting down, you've just made a change to something. System Restore may be saving a restore point. If it's getting a bit full for the amount of disk space you've allotted, it will have to first delete an older restore point to clear more room. All that takes time. If you suspect that this might be happenning on your system, you can clear some of the older restore points from your system by altering the System Restore settings to a smaller disk percentage. Reboot to make the change take effect, then increase the restore percentage back to where it was. You also have the option to completely erase all the older restore points, if you feel you no longer need them, and start anew. To do this, you Disable System Restore, reboot, and then ReEnable System Restore.
---------------- I'd recommend having some sort of virus protection. To make sure older programs aren't mucking up your Registry, I recommend a Registry Cleaner of some sort. RegClean is free and works well with most Win9x. I haven't tried it much with WinME, but I believe it should work OK. http://download.com.com/3000-2094-881470.html?tag=list And there's a pretty good shutdown/restart troubleshooter at http://www.aumha.org/win4/a/shutdown.htm Best of luck . . .
