Hi,
When I start up Windows Explorer it opens up and takes about 30 seconds to fully display. The hard drive is busy like it is loading. If I open it again it starts normally, however the first time I use it after I turn on my PC it does the delay thing. Do I have something set wrong in Windows or is this a hardware problem? The hard drive is on a RAID controller. But I have built other PC's with RAID and I never noticed this. I have never noticed this on other PC's, just mine, lucky me. This is on the PC in my signature. TIA

Run msconfig and clear out your start up tab.

Thanks KHT, I've tried that, made no difference. I'm thinking it is some setting that prefetches data. I checked indexing on the drive and it is enabled. After it loads up I'm good to go till I turn off the PC. If I close Windows Explorer and go into it again it loads right up. Even programs like Ad-Aware go through this process when I first start it, it's maddening!

OK, I assume you cleared EVERYTHING in your start up tab.
Are you networked? Could explorer be trying to find a networked resource or mapped drive that is causing a problem? If so, there is a reg hack that can sometimes help with XP and sometimes W2k. If not, disable any network adaptors not being used. Also, is your indexing service set to automatic? If it is, set it to manual and stop it. |

Check in services in Administrative tools. Indexing service, right click, properties.
You might want to try this before opening Explorer the first time. Click start\run, and then type in each drive letter separately to see if it opens immediately or if there is a delay. For example, start\run, type in C:, click enter. If the C: drive opens immediately then go to the next drive letter. In my case I have several logical drives so i`d go down the lne. Say if I typed H: and there was a delay for that drive I then isolated the drive that is causing the delay and then I could start typing in directories on the H: drive until I nailed down the culprit. Another thing, did this start say just after any programs or apps where installed? And also, you don`t have a CD in any of your CD Roms do you? I have a client that always has a CD installed that he uses a lot and causes much the same type of problem you`re describing. Pop the CD out and explorer opens without a delay. Try checking for any processes in Task Manager that may be causing it. Does this still happen in safe mode? A few things to try that might help you find it... ![]() edit: almost forgot. try checking in event viewer to see if there are any errors thast correspond to the times you have the problem. Hey KHT I think you nailed it. I went into event viewer and there were errors. I had installed a TV Wonder card awhile back, it did not have XP drivers, I installed windows 2000 drivers and was very buggy. I removed the card and went into device manager to remove it and it did not show up. So I left everything alone. Well it must still be in there becuase when I went to open windows explorer the event viewer told me there was errors and refered to the TV Wonder card. I'm going to reinstall the card and remove it from device manager, as I bet it shows up again when I put the card back. Matter of fact I checked ATI's site and they now have XP drivers for it. I think this is the problem. When I do all this I'll let you know what happens. Thanks for your help.

Hi,
Well I've worked extensively on my pc did everything KHT suggested and Windows explorer still loads slow? I am getting no errors in event manager now. I saw this on the internet but I don't understand how to do it, can anyone explain? Quote:
