fqpissed The Phantom Wupdater

Ok so I installed some desktop customizing software on Win98. From then on i kept getting messages from my firewall about a program on my computer attempting to access the internet. I didnt like this so I uninstalled the customizer.

Still had the messages so I located the program and uninstalled it from Add/remove programs.
Still everytime I restart it tries to access so I ran msconfig and unchecked the entry it had in startup but still it went on.
At the end of my wick I deleted the program and the folder it was in.
Now however, everytime I start I get the searching for program box, pop up.

This really gets to me. I want to know where this program is on my system and how to obliterate it.
I have updated my norton anti virus and ran mutiple virus scans, I have deleted all temporary files and emptied my recylce bin. I have looked in my registery (which admitedly I know nothing about) for entries relating to this program.
Nada.
The program itself is wupdater.exe and ran from C:\Program Files/Common FIles/Keenware/ Seaching google has revealed nothing and my handy startup compendium pacs-portal doesnt even have an entry.. something must be up with that!
HELP

Since you've deleted the program files already, there's probably a Registry entry, or .ini file entry, still hanging about. For the .ini entries, you can check in System Information again (Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Information . . . and click on the plus (+) sign next to Software Environment, then on Startup, and see if there's still an entry being called from an .ini file or from the Registry. If it's called from an .ini file, open that file with NotePad and edit out that line. If it's called from the Registry, it's probably in HKEY_Local_Machine/Software/Microsoft/Windows/Current Version/Run ...or /RunService. If you suspect if might have dropped quite a few hard-to-find Registry entries that might not have uninstalled, try a run of RegClean, it works nicely with Win98 http://download.com.com/3000-2094-881470.html?tag=list

See if that cleans it up

That sounds like it's referring to the Startup folder on your Windows Start menu. Look in on Start/Programs/Startup and see if the icon for that program is listed. Deleting the shortcut icon from that folder should remove it from that list in System Information . . . and you should be finished with this task! The phantom should vanish.

[p.s. noticed in your sig you have the Iiyama Vision Master monitor - I have a few of their 17" series - what quality work they are. One of the best screens anywhere]
