Well, you see, just when I was thinking how smart I am: you come up with another puzzle that I haven't solved before.

This may seem like an odd fix, but it comes from a similiar thread I saw regarding Win95 and a problem like this, where files got a bit thrown about by a power out while Norton antivirus was running. Since I assume you have some antivirus running also, it may be that you've had something similiar happen while the network card was giving Win98 fits.

Here's the procedure:
1) Reboot the machine in DOS mode
2) From the A:>prompt, type scandisk
3) If it finishes OK, then run defrag (also by typing it at the prompt) --- both the scandisk and the defrag will take considerably more time to complete in DOS than in Windows, so you might want to have something else to do rather than have a staring contest with DOS.
4) If all goes well, reboot normally and see if the files are gone from the desktop.

You could also try uninstalling/reinstalling your AntiVirus = might need special removal instructions depending on your program - you can check on their website if you're not sure. When all done with the reinstall, run a complete system scan with updated definitions to make sure the programs working OK (no more strange files on the desktop), and that you're virus-free.

Since I haven't seen this one before, if any other techs out there have: please jump in with solutions/explanations.
. . . Gary
