f-disk with XP
Hi folks a good friend of mine brought me his girl friends computer and want me to wipe his hard drive,which has XP installed (pirated)..I dont have an XP cd,nor does he or his girl friend,he has a 98se disk(legal)that he wants installed..How do I go about fdisking the hard drive that has XP???TIA..GaryD..

Just boot from the disk. Type fdisk at the prompt.
It will tell you that there's a non-FAT/FAT32 partition. Proceed and on the options, select the Remove the non-DOS partition. That's it.

You'll need a start up or boot disk to fdisk (to create partitions) and format the partitions. The FDISK & FORMAT can help you with the process.

Hi Cricket I have a 98 boot disk will this work even tho the computer has win XP installed,I was under the impression that it would not work with xp and the ntfs kernle...

You need to set the floppy as the first boot device in BIOS.
Then it can work. FDISK won't read the info on the NTFS partition but it surely can get rid of it. |

You will only be able to create a FAT32 partition if you use FDISK. But then, you can convert that FAT32 partition to NTFS.
You can do all this in Windows XP setup. No need to run FDISK. |

Thanks guys but a fat32 partition will be fine because we are going to install win 98se anyway...thanks again for all the great help,I think I can go on from here...GaryD..
