choppy sound in winamp and movies

Hi all,

got a lil prob that just started happening a few hrs ago. i installed visio cause i wanted to make a layout, and every few mins it would go a lil laggy. i thought nothing of it. so now im playin winamp, and all of a sudden every few mins it starts to get real choppy. my mouse movement is no longer smooth, it seems kinda lumpy. ive uninstalled visio since and im still gettin choppyness. ive checked whats running in the background and its the same programs that have always been running.

as i said this just started happening today, ive been using this setup for months and no probs.

anyone have an idea what could b the prob?

im runnin a celeron 900 overclocked to 1.01GHz, 512ram, 128mb Ati radeon pro ultimate

havnt changed anything, newest software installed was visio which is now uninstalled

any help would b appreciated

thanks

tazz

Did you check for infection? Does the cpu seems like it's processing something big? You can try system restore and see if it fixes it.

the HD goes into a churn... then just goes bakc to normal a few secs after.

cant really do a system restore...i think i turned that feature off lol. if i get probs i cant figure out... il try a format/reinstall

just thought id find out if anyone knows of a similar scenario first though

thanks

typically when my system slows down and gets choppy, I usually have:

1. a system infection
2. there is a system hog running in the background
3. my HD space is almost spent

runnign a virus scan as we speak... i dont think its a virus - comps been pretty clean considering i run it all the time

ive checked the ctrl-alt-del box for programs running.... and they r the same programs - basically programs i know about, that r running and should b running

the space thing could b the prob... guess its time to delete some things and give it a try

thanks

have tried makin space, also shut down EVERY background proggy - still the HD seems to b accessing somethign. i checked my firewall logs - nothing out of the ordinary.

im guessing a format/reinstall is in order. unless someone can shed some light on this prob thats prolly what il end up doin in a few days

thanks

How old is the HD and what brand? Maybe it's at the end of it's life. However, I doubt that a failing HD can cause the mouse to act up.
