XP slow boot & other problems .

Print this info .

These are tips from others & my own experieces .

By far , my biggest problem , was caused by a 8 speed cd rom . ( Samsung SCR-830 )
Installing an even older 4 speed rom , fixed the problems .
There were no conflicts in Device Manager & the latest drivers were installed .
The same rom worked perfectly in 98 ( and still does )

It pay's to isolate your problems , by disconecting all your cards / hardware & reinstalling one by one .
In other words , if you have recently added or suspect the above > Remove & see if it boots up normally .

Problems were .
1 . Very slow boot .
2 . Some times failed to boot .
3 . Very slow opening of some programs .
4 . Select different folder ( when using WinZip ) very slow to open .
5 . Music CD's would not work .

If your system hangs about 2 or 3 minutes at startup, where you can't access the Start button or the Taskbar, it may be due to one specific service (Background Intelligent Transfer) running in the background. Microsoft put out a patch for this but it didn't work for me. Here's what you do:

Click on Start, Control Panel, Administrative Tools then Services.
Go to the 'Services' tab, find the 'Background Intelligent Transfer' service.
Disable it, apply the changes & reboot.

Or if you don't want to disable it .

Background Intelligent Transfer Service. Uses idle network bandwidth to transfer data. For the majority of Users this feature should be of little use & as such I’d recommend setting it to Manual. Those on highly active Networks may benefit from having this set to Automatic, although it may be worth testing out to see if it does.

================================

Right-click 'My Computer' select 'Manage' , open Services & Applications .
Select 'Services' .
Set 'Windows Management Instrumentation' to manual (default is Automatic).
This service starts up automatically , even if set to manual , but solves slow booting of my PC - might work 4 u !!

A great new feature in Microsoft Windows XP is the ability to do a boot defragment. This places all boot files next to each other on the disk to allow for faster booting. By default this option in enables but on some builds it is not so below is how to turn it on.
• Defragment boot files
The boot defragment option is usually enabled by default, but it may be disabled, or not properly enabled. If it's not working, XP may boot dog-slow.

# Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Dfrg\BootOptimizeFunction
# Select Enable from the list on the right.
# Right on it and select Modify.
# Change the value to Y to enable and N to disable.
# Reboot your computer.

Boot XP faster
http://www.windowsxpatoz.com/cgi-bin...&id=1036282433

1. Open notepad.exe, type "del c:\windows\prefetch\ntosboot-*.* /q" (without the quotes) & save as "ntosboot.bat" in c:\
2. From the Start menu, select "Run..." & type "gpedit.msc".
3. Double click "Windows Settings" under "Computer Configuration" and double click again on "Shutdown" in the right window.
4. In the new window, click "add", "Browse", locate your "ntosboot.bat" file & click "Open".
5. Click "OK", "Apply" & "OK" once again to exit.
6. From the Start menu, select "Run..." & type "devmgmt.msc".
7. Double click on "IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers"
8. Right click on "Primary IDE Channel" and select "Properties".
9. Select the "Advanced Settings" tab then on the device 0 or 1 that doesn't have 'device type' greyed out select 'none' instead of 'autodetect' & click "OK".
10. Right click on "Secondary IDE channel", select "Properties" and repeat step 9.
11. Reboot your computer.

Click start button then go to settings -> control panel -> Sound,Speech and Audio devices -> Sounds and Audio Devices -> Sounds, then under program events and windows menu click on "Exit Windows" sub-menu and highlight it.now from sounds you can select, choose "none" and then click apply and OK.
Now you can see some improvements when shutting down your system.

You can protect your comp from Spyfiles by using these 3 programs .

http://beam.to/spybotsd
What does SpyBot-Search & Destroy?

SpyBot-S&D searches your hard drive for so-called spy- or adbots; little modules that are
responsible for the ads many programs display. But many of these modules also transmit
information about your surfing behaviour and more to the net.
If SpyBot-S&D finds such modules, it can remove them - or replace them with empty dummies in
case their host software won't run with its bot removed. In most cases, the host still runs
fine after removing the bot.
For a list of 'supported' bots see the feature lists below. The Spybot-S&D interface is so
easy, that updates just require replacing a file of about 80k in size. Those updates are
distributed by my software mailinglist, over this page and are also available from inside the
programs update section.

Another feature of Spybot S&D is the removal of usage tracks, which makes it more complicated
for unknown spybots to transmit useful data. The list of last visited websites, opened files,
started programs, cookies, all that and more can be cleaned. Supported are the three major
browsers Internet Explorer, Netscape Communicator and Opera.

Make sure you use the SpyBot > Online > Update button regularly .

-----------------------------

http://www.wilderssecurity.com/spywareblaster.html

SpywareBlaster doesn't scan and clean for spyware - it prevents it from ever being installed.

How? By setting a "kill bit" for the CLSIDs of spyware ActiveX controls, it prevents the
installation of any of them from a webpage. You can run Internet Explorer with Active-X enabled, but you will never even get a "Yes/No" box popped up, asking you to install a spyware Active-X control (Internet Explorer will never download or run it!). All other Active-X controls or plug-ins will work fine.

The SpywareBlaster database contains information on these known spyware Active-X controls. Make
sure you run the Check For Updates feature frequently to get the latest database! (And make sure you check the new items to protect your system against them!)

As a side benefit, setting this "kill bit" will also prevent the spyware Active-X from running,
in many cases, if it is already installed on your system.*

Disable the Windows XP Prefetcher
http://www.windows-help.net/WindowsXP/troub-07.html
http://www.tweak3d.net/tweak/winstartupnew/

Windows XP has a Prefetcher component, which shortens the amount of time it takes to start
Windows and programs. When trouble shooting either Windows or program start-up issues, it might
be helpful to disable the prefetcher, because it runs as a background service while other
applications are running or loading.

To disable the prefetcher:

Start the Registry Editor
Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SYSTEM \ CurrentControlSet \ Control \ SessionManager \ Memory Management \ PrefetchParameters
Double-click the EnablePrefetcher value (remember the value that EnablePrefetcher is set to!)
Change the Value data to 0 to disable the prefetcher .
Close the registry editor and reboot the computer for the changes to take effect
When done troubleshooting, you can re-enable the prefetcher by changing the Value data to its
original value.

Values for EnablePrefetcher are:

0 - no prefetch
1 - prefetch applications only
2 - prefetch boot only
3 - prefetch both applications & boot (default)
I find 5 is best .
It may also be useful to periodically clean up the prefetch folder, as it may contain obsolete
links. The Prefetch folder can be found in the Windows folder on your system drive. Select all
the files, and delete them. When done, reboot your computer.

Application Slow-Downs in Windows XP
http://www.scotsnewsletter.com/47.htm

Control Panel > Network Connections > Right-click your main network connection , choose
Properties > Double-click "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" > Click Advanced
button > Select WINS tab .

The solution I've seen recommended and posted in various places is to
remove the check mark beside "Enable LMHOSTS lookup" on the WINS tab
and/or "Disable NetBIOS over TCP/IP." People report that the
application slow-downs go away .

======================================

Not networking , this will help .
1) Control Panel -> Internet Options
2) Connections tab
3) LAN Settings
4) Uncheck "Automatically Detect Settings"

Maybe you have done this ( note the last line )

http://www.tweakxp.com/TweakXP/display.asp?id=1509
These Settings will fine tune your systems memory

management -atleast 512MB of ram recomended

go to start\run\regedit -and then to the following key

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management

1.DisablePagingExecutive -double click it and in the decimal put a 1 - this allows XP to keep data in memory now instead of paging sections of ram to harddrive yeilds faster performance.

2.LargeSystemCache- double click it and change the decimal to 1 -this allows XP Kernal to Run in memory improves system performance a lot

Reboot and watch your system fly ..happy tweakin

Note: This tweak may cause problems with some Nvidia cards & drivers (tweak forum Admin)
