hangs on welcome

just finished a new build,intel 1.6-intel d850mv,sparkel 300w,256 kingston rambus.
problem,it did fine during setup, installed several things and suddenly started hanging on the welcome screen,i deleted all the software except nero and it still does it.when the welcome comes on there is one beep then hangs, if i alt, ctrl, delete it continues with no problems.by the way i have xp home with sp1 installed.

1 Long Beep: Memory problem
Explanation: There is a failure of some sort related to the system memory.
Diagnosis: The first bank of memory probably has a failure of some sort; this is usually just a
physical problem such as an incorrectly inserted module, but may also mean a bad memory chip in
a module. It is possible that there is a failure related to the motherboard or a system device
as well.

i thought it might have something to do with using the MB cd so i restored back to before i installed that and sure enough it fixed it,NOW what i am wondering is it necessary to use the MD cd with xp? it seems to run very well without that install.

You don't have to use the CD supplied by Intel, because XP has its own set of drivers for that hardware. You could, however, load one driver at a time, to isolate the problem. That or get the latest from intel's web site.

You can just use the windows drivers. I think for intel boards, they are pretty good, anyway. Its when you get into off brands that you start running into troubles.
