My exwife bought a Dell a few months ago. It came preloaded with the dreaded McAfee AV. When the trial was up she decided to buy an AV package, so she opted for Norton System Works. Not just the AV, mind you, but the whole pack of wasted extras. Now comes the best part--she installed the complete Norton package WITHOUT uninstalling the McAfee!! No IE anymore, can't uninstall either and the whole system is unstable. Tried to talk my son thru some diagnostics, but Dell has hidden many of the Admin tools. What a mess! Suggested she work with Dell to solve her problem, but they want $ to talk. So my latest offer is, I'll TRY to fix it, but I get PAID cash. Any one experience this kind of dilemma before? If I get this thing to fix, I'm probably gonna come beggin for help from you guys and gals.

Hey PR,
See if this helps if you get the computer. Looks like Bailey beat me to it. Since he has already tackled this in the past, the reinstall is probably your best bet.

Dell Tech support is hell. You're on hold for at least 30 minutes even if you call at 2am. You'll get someone with a foreign accent who doesn't know anything without looking at a manual. My bro spent 3hrs on the phone just to reformat and re-install WinME once.
Reformatting my dell isn't actually hard. I don't remember the exact steps. But I recall that all I have to do is to find the Dell Diagnostic CD and the OS cd. 1st set the boot sequence to the CD-rom drive. Place the Dell CD inside the system and reboot. This allows the system to load to DOS. There I can reformat the HD. Reboot again. The system won't be able to detect a Windows OS so it will read from the Dell CD. Follow the onscreen instructions then it will ask for the OS cd (in my case, WinXP). I think my dell is a dimension 8100.
