fault in IE on Win 98 SE

I've built about 30 com's and have found 98se to be fairly stable but I've come across a problem that I cant seem to resolve so any help would be apreciated. The problem stems from Internet explorer createing a fault with User.exe when it trys to access different pages on the web and then the only out is to shut down IE. Ive used 5.1 5.2 5.5 and 6 and its the same for all. Ive reinstalled TWICE,Windows that is, all to no avail. I even went so far as to try deleting the user.exe file from dos knowing that it would wank the system but its driveing me nuts. It seems to be occouring randomdly but Im sure there is some pattern to the pages it pops up on. Anyways I'm running " Win98 SE, on a Western didgital 60 gig caviar HD, on an asus A7N266-C Mother-board with the nvida chipset 27.02, I use Starband through a satalite dish to access the internet,no phone, but it has never had this problem in the 2 years Ive had it,Ive uninstalled my sound card and installed the MB sound, tired of creative,I changed my graphics card from an ati to a nvida Gforce4 driver ver27.42, my starband modem is hooked up through usb allthough it happened through the ethernet card as well.the CPU is an AMD XP 2200 and it has 256 megs of ddr pc2100 ram installed. their are no conflicts and all systems are good to go in device man. Im sure Im forgeting something but this is long eneuogh allready. Any HELP would be greatly appreciated and I hope I put this querry in the right place, Thanks in advance.

This may not apply to you, but are you by chance using Pop-Up Stopper as an ad-blocker? I was using IE 5.5 and only got the User.exe lockup problem occasionally, but after I started using that pop-up blocker I'd get it about every other website I went to. After I took it back off of there, IE worked fine again. Just a guess, sorry if it doesn't apply to your prob.

See if any of the fix ideas in this thread help out: http://www.nocrash.com/ncbbs/msgs/3158.shtml

[if one does, post which one did the trick, just so that others in the same situation can consider that]

Best of luck

It worked!! Just one little check mark. For anyone with this problem and running IE 6 open tools then internet options then advanced and look for the line that says allow 3rd party browser and un check this then restart the browser and wala. this wont work on IE 5 cus It dont have that line. Thanks a mill I was getting dingy; Scott

Glad it worked. Strange thing is: that error seems to have been popping up since the IE3 transition to IE4/IE5 (I noticed that when I looked around a little). What's stranger is that in 10 years and countless computers, so few of us have ever heard of it.

You are now one of the exclusive holders of a rare, esoteric, obscure, arcane, and counter-intuitive repair knowledge
