Safe to Delete Everything in TEMP

Is it safe to remove everything in the temp folder ?
I don't want to cause any system errors. I just want to free up some space!

I generally delete everything and so far I have had no problems. Just make sure you don't delete anything when you are in the middle of something like installing a program.

The general rule is delete anything older than 24 hours. I`ve been deleting every (meaning disregard the 24 hour rule) *.tmp and ~*.* file for the last few years and have never once had a problem with any W9x\NT system yet.

~*.* files

KHT,

What does the ~ mean when it is the first character in a file name? I have noticed that it is mostly present in tmp files.

If you have concerns or worry about deleting the temp dirs, then you can copy / move the files to another location for safe keeping for a week or so. If nothing asks for a missing file (and it shouldn't), then you can delete them.

Two Rails has an excellent suggestion for when in doubt about deleting files. I use that exact method of moving *.dll files after I clean up from an app uninstall. If a program generates an error looking for a certain .dll, it most likely is in the directory I moved it to. If after a week or so I get no error messages, like Two Rails said, I delete the directory.

The tilde ~ has various uses but usually refers to .tmp files. MS Office and Word use them alot as well as address book backups.

This search crieria [~*.*, *~.*, *.??~] turned up these results on my machine. keith.wa~, ~rjbtemp0, ~rptemp0, rox.wa~. The two ending in .wa~ are address book backups and I don`t delete those. The ones starting with ~ are temp folders used by Real Player. Those I deleted.

I`ve read of one account of some 6000+ temp files found on a machine that was never cleaned up. The most I ever found was like 200 or so.

Yep, anything in the Windows/Temp can be deleted without worry. But if one of the files is in use, Windows will let you know.
