Windows XP intermittently freezes

We have a windows XP Home laptop that up until last week had been running very smoothly.

Then it got w32.mimail.a virus so I ran a fix program I downloaded from the Symantec website and then installed outstanding services packs and security updates.

Now it freezes on occasion (about twice a day).

If it was my PC I'd reformat and reinstall windows however in this case if possible I'd like to try and fix it as the user has alot of data and settings I'd have to backup first.

Can anyone walk me through some steps to find out what is wrong?

I know this could just an untraceable windows "issue" so if I'll have to bite the bullet and reinstall then tell me so.

Cheers

DJ
