running windows 98, amd duron 1000mhz, 320 mb ram. defrag hangs on 0% checking drive for errors overnite. internet explorer won't load sites which are more secure, ie login pages and other secured sites. i originally thought it might be something to do with the cache, but then realized that 98 doesn't do that like xp does. any ideas? currently downloading internet explorer 6 sp1 to hopefully fix the internet problem, but i don't know about the defrag. i appreciate the help

The IE problem sounds like a security setting that's off. Your download might help. It could be that those sites required 128bit security, and IE6 has that by default.
The defrag might be OK, it's just a busy system. Try it in Safe Mode (tap F8 while booting). Best of luck . . . Gary |

thanks, i will try it in safe mode, but should it be sitting overnite and not get anywhere, that just seems a bit odd. i have always used diskeeper, do you think a 3rd party app might be better. thanks for the advice gary

I haven't met a defrag program I didn't like. They all work pretty well. Most of the time I just use whatever is available - the builtin Windows applet isn't too bad.

alright, well the internet update fixed the one problem. they are going to try diskeeper lite and see if that works. i just like diskeeper a lot, and thought this would be a good solution to the issue, as i am not sure how to fix the problem they are having.

Just about any defrag utility will run better in Safe Mode = did they try that yet? Has a good chance.
I'd guess some file-sharing, instant-messenger, or multi-media player [and hopefully no spyware] has been interrupting the defrags with background activity. In Safe Mode, that's not going to happen. If the regular Diskeeper isn't working, just for troubleshooting purposes, they could try the Windows builtin defrag utility. Should they suspect trouble with Diskeeper, they'd want to check it's website for info and patches. . . . Gary |
