add hardware in xp home

no real problem but, i changed modems from a chepo to a diamond supra express ext. xp didn't pnp it so i went to select your modem from list.on every computer os (including xp pro)that i have used this option lists a lot of mfg.and you pick the correct modem.
on my new build with xp home there was only the one(standard modem or something)i finally figured out to go to have disk then browse and c and the list came up.has anyone else noticed this or is this common with xp home?

it probably was just the modem itself, and figuring it was external, it just didn't see it

i'm sure it didn't see it but why when i went to add/remove hardware -modem-and to select manually what hardware would it not give me choices of mfg. like my other computers,it only showed 1 and that was standard modem(i think that's what it said),other comps have several choices(robatics, diamond, intel etc.)i had to go to have disk, brouse,c drive, then diamond showed up.i was just curious.

i think under xp you just select the modem speed fom the standerd modem typs list and it instales a geniric driver which shod work as most modems come with a install disk which you run to set up and install the fax and other software xp will just let you use that instead if its a external one if it a pci or other internal modem then xp will find and install most makes and model nos with out any manufactures software
