Changing Drive letters

I just installed windows 2000. It named my second HDD C:, my cd-rw d:, my cd-rom E:, and my HDD with win2000 F:. How can I change it so that F is C:, C is D:, etc.

If I'm not mistaken you won't be able to change the drive letter of the primary partition. I had to remove the 2nd. hard drive to get my C drive back, then add the 2nd. drive

yes it is true you can't change your C Drive at all but you can at least make the F Drive your D Drive and so on. most likely this was caused cause of the way you have your drives installed.

My drives are installed the right way. I haven't touched them since I installed the second HDD, and went through hell getting it to work right. I had to update the bios, and try every jumper setting before they would work. Believe me they are installed the right way. I've managed to get them in a more managable order. I guess it will have to do untill I have the time to unhook the second HDD and reinstall windows.

You can change the C drive. The only drive you can't change is the one that contains the windows files. Which in my case was F drive.

If I did that, I wouldn't be able to boot.

use a win98 boot disk and boot the computer and run fdisk look at the partition info for each drive as a rule the c drive will be set to active if it is then the win2k boot files are on that drive as only a active partition can boot the computer windows can be instaled on any partition or hard drive but the boot sector file must be on the first hard drive on the ide controla and that drive is disk 0 witch will be the c drive thats the way multy boot computers work all the boot files are on c with a boot loader witch selectes witch op system to load when you start your computer. i wood use partition magic to ghost the f drive to the c drive then use drive mapper to change any reg keys and shortcuts from f to c . i do this a lot as i have a disk image which i made of my d drive when i set up a dule boot win 98/2k the image is 2k on my m drive witch i restor when windows gets to bloted to work with. its quicker than a reinstall of windows and all programs. i also used the image to remove win98 from the c drive and revert to a singale boot pc i had one problam once when i got the nt loader missing error but i just ran a over the to install of 2k and it fixed it so even if you cant boot the over the top instal will fix any problams

First, Win2k is on the first hard drive, buts it is labeled as F.
Second, I'm not running a dual boot.
Third, there isn't a C drive anymore. I changed its letter to G, because I wanted it after the main HDD.
Fourth, I don't have enough disk space to "ghost".

If it was me and i had just installed it, I would reinstall with only the one hd hooked up then add the others. This happened to me one time with 2000. And like you said I had drives installed correctly. Master at end of cable with slave on middle connector and pins set correctly. I unhooked ide2 and just just had main drive and cd on ide1 and then after installation hooked ide2 back up and all was well. Seems like if you look closely either right before or right after you format you will see drive letter that the installation will go on....I could be wrong about that though.
