While I wish I could help you on a fix without the "repair option" but since I don't use IE I don't have a clue. You could try an alternative browser and avoid the repair, but if you want to try the repair you need to skip the recovery console and go on as if you are going to install a fresh install, once the setup sees the existing XP install it will give you the option to repair. If you do repair the OS you will need to reinstall all critical updates as well as SP-1 if not included with your XP disk.

yup i did that fresh intall that your talking about thats what i was trying to say on my first post. but when xp recognise the existing xp installed in the system it was asking if i want to install xp press enter and if i want to repair it press r. so i press r and it went back to dos and was asking for which os you want to repair. so click 1. then from there it just give me all this line of messages and does nothing. andyms18a what browser do you use and is it better that IE. any recommendation would be all good. thanks for the quick reply. my next thing i'll do probably un-install IE and re-install it back see if this fix the problem.

There will be 2 prompts for the repair the first will be the repair console ( which is a command prompt) and the second will be the install repair (which will not be a command prompt) and is after the ELUA agreement in which you have to hit F8 to accept.

I use mozilla and mozilla firebird as my browsers because of too many problem such as yours with IE.

The repair should not disturb your programs and files, but you will need to reinstall any MS critical updates as well as SP-1 if it is not included on you're XP disk.

You don't need to do a repair. Generally clearing your cache (Tools/Internet Options/Delete Files) fixes it. It may take up to 5 minutes to clear it but you should be able to view source again after you clear it. I have seen this problem many times and a related one (can only save images as .bmp). Clearing the cache has always fixed it.

Yeah, IE has 2 very nagging problems. One is the cache filling up problem in your case. The other is with window sizing where the window won't stay full screen. Mozilla is a good choice. I still personally use IE mostly with Opera, Mozilla and NS some for testing purposes.
