IE problem

I am posting this through my friend, because he is unable to access IE at this point. He is able to run Kazaa and download music and chat on AIM, but when he loads Internet Explorer, it says "Connecting to site" and then it says "Page cannot be displayed". He is running WIN 98SE and on a cable connection. They reformatted the system and it is still doing it, they reverted to the original version of IE and it is still doing it.
I told him to update IE, but he said he cant because he is unable to browse any website. He can't run Windows Update, because that requires him to run IE and open a site which he isn't able to do.

I am not sure what exactly to do, because I have never heard of this problem before. Any ideas? Thanks for the input.

Kazaa or Kazaa Lite? If it is Kazaa, this is the prime reason I have told people not to touch it with a thousand mile long pole. Get rid of Kazaa and run Adaware 6.

If he has a firewall router setup with his cable modem, have him try setting that up from scratch. One of the first steps in that is to reset the cable modem. If no router is in use, have them try resetting the cable modem - according to the cable ISP's steps.

And Kazaa really is a bag of worms, sometimes literally. The symptoms you're mentioning might be the qhost worm. Do both a full system antivirus scan, and an antispyware scan. I have to agree with Hal that life is better without Kazaa. or Gator, for that matter.

Best of luck
. . . Gary

[p.s. download links for many antispyware tools are on the "Software" page over at http://www.spywareinfo.com ]
