Installing windows 2k

I have a win 2K CD, it wont boot with the CD so I use a boot disk. I go to the drive that has my win 2k CD what then...? Do I choose setup.exe or is there more to this?

there should be a folder on the cd called bootdisk. open it, and run the makeboot.exe file. make sure you have 4 floppies handy

boot with your boot disk change to the cd then at the dos prompt type cd I386 and hit enter then type winnt32.exe and hit enter or if that dont start setup type winnt.exe and hit enter

Just follow drgon's advice its a lot easier. I think it takes aboot 4 floppies.

It doesnt have any of that, its a OEM that came with a HP and unfortunatly it only works with that HP. I guesse I got to keep looking .

The command is "winnt" withour quotes. Note you must have smartdrv.exe running or the install will take hours. You can download smartdrive and put is on a floppy. After your bootdisk loads type smartdrv.exe and hit enter. The install will now take the normal amount of time.

nice one c j i new the winnt bit but forgot the smart drive but as ghost2003 pointed out his cd is hp oem recovery and not a full 2k one it wont work on any other computer

ghost2003 you can try a get a full copy of 2k from hp or see if a frend has one you can use and just use your licence key
our by a copy of xp and install that

Just navigate to the CD drive ("D"??) and run i386\winnt

My computer cant run XP, that hp oem was all I could get from friends. I might be able to get a NT.

You CAN install from the HP CD - I was wrong when I said to use \i386\winnt. HP cunningly call the folder "WINDOWS 2000" so anyone with a little knowledge of DOS 8.3 filenames will try "WINDOW~1", but it's hard coded as "WINDOW~A". Use \WINDOW~A\winnt to run install from the CD.
