Help, windows xp unstable with 1g ram

I had 512 of pc3200 400 mhz ddr ram....I just added another 512 of the same ram. XP became very unstable...it would restart randomly and the majority of my program crashed when started. I pulled the 2nd stick out and things have calmed down and everything seemd to run fine....

I am running an Asus A7V600 M/B with Xp home....'

Do I need to manually change something?

Sounds like the ram istelf, what happens if you put the 'new' ram in the place of the 'old' ram. If the problems remain then I would lean towards a bad stick, if the problems do not happen with only the 'new' ram in the first slot then I'd lean towards the motherboard.

Make sure that the slot is clean and there is no dust bunny family down there. It is also possible that you do not have approved RAM for the motherboard, make sure that you follow the recommnendations for the slots and the types of ram to use in each. I am not familiar with your board but I have seen some very specific types of ram to use.

Also there are some times limits to the number of ram chips of a certain type (ie limit use of 3200 to two slots only - although it sounds like you only have two in use anyway)

What are the mem settings at? If you have tight settings, set them to default. If you don't do anything that requires that much ram, you might think about pulling the second stick permanently. Just enough ram to cover the highest usage usualy nets best performance.

OK, I took back the 1st stick of RAM and it turns out that it was bad....I went to the original vendor and got another stick of the same RAM that I have already....When I put it in and boot up it I get an error message that a file is missing or corrupt. When I take one stick out it works fine. I have checked the specs for my M/B and It can use 2 of the 3 Banks for pc3200 DDR400 RAM . The RAM even is listed in the approved RAM list....I have Infineon PC3200 400 MHZ. How do I check the memery setting? Is that in the BIOS.....
