How is DOS installed...

Hello everybody,

I have a question on DOS. FORMAT and FDISK are both DOS commands, so if you don't have an OS installed yet, but your using your boot disk to do FORMAT and FDISK, how are you using those two commands from the boot disk IF you don't have DOS installed? Does DOS install when you install your OS?

TIA

Look on the bootable floppy disk that you're using to fdisk and format the hard drive...you'll see command.com, the file that contains the DOS command processor. The following is from Webopedia.com...

"Command Processor: The part of the operating system that receives and executes operating system commands. Every operating system has a command processor. When the command prompt is displayed, the command processor is waiting for a command. After you enter a command, the command processor analyzes the syntax to make sure the command is valid, and then either executes the command or issues an error warning. For operating systems with a graphical user interface, the command processor interprets mouse operations and executes the appropriate command."

. . . another way to say the same thing -

Enough DOS can fit on a bootable floppy to use the commands to set up a hard drive for a more complete installation later.

I think it's DOS 7 that is included when you install Windows 9x. The last full-version DOS that could be installed separately from floppies (that I can remember) was something like DOS 6 or 6.2.

Hey there Cricket. after re-reading both your version & mine, I've decided I like yours better. But I'm too tired to highlight mine and press Delete. . . [pretty tired, eh?]

There are quite a few commands and switches to go with them. Here's one link:
