OK Gang I'm looking for confirmation that I'm on the right track here...
Specs: 500MHz Celeron 128MB RAM 32MB Voodoo 4-4500 PCI PII-3741 LMRT Mobo PC Chips http://www.amptron.com (I know...) Just successfully flashed BIOS to latest date (Nov 20, 2000) C-10GB WD 5400rpm HD(Primary IDE master) D-2.5GB HD(?)(Primary IDE slave) E-Sony CRX 140E CDRW9(Secondary IDE master) F-50x CDROM(Secondary IDE slave) Win 98 (initial) I just bought an IBM Deskstar 75GXP 7200rpm ATA100 46.1GB HD and I want to remove the old 10GB & 2.5GB completely (just attach long enough to copy some data but not the O/S). I have the full version of Win 98se disc. I want to install the HD using F/Disk and partition out 5 drives total: C-Operating system (size=??) D-Windows Swap file (size=1.5 times expected RAM {256}) E-Son's personal stuff (size=10-12GB) F-Daughter's personal stuff (size=10-12GB) G-Community download drive (music mainly)(size=remainder) I've created a startup disk using the Win 98se disc. I believe it automatically contains fdisk, format, edit(?) and CDROM drivers. If I remove the old drives and attach the 80-wire cable to IDE 1 then boot with the startup disk then go into bios and detect the new HD then use fdisk to partition setting c: as the active dos partition with the other 4 as logical partitions then format c: /s and then format the other drives with format d: etc. Then will I be able to install Win 98se onto c: ???? Also looking for suggestions on the sizes for the logical HD's and the O/S drive? Is this looking right? Do you forsee problems? The mobo supports ata 33/66. Thanks for your input ![]() I've already written down or backed up settings/preferences/addresses/dial up settings etc. |

Sounds like you got it all figured out, all of what you said should work fine.
As far as the sizes go, You got 10 for each kid, about a 500 meg swap partition, so that's 20 and a half. Unless you've got T3 lines, the kids probably won't be able to download more than 5 gigs per day, so I'd leave the "remainder" at 5 megs, and leave 20 gigs as the primary partition. I pseronally don't like to install apps on any partition except the primary partition, because it's just too messy to keep track of when you have things installed all over the place. Hence the primary partition can get kinda large, since all applications are installed there. Xayd |

Also, check your boot disk to make sure that you can access the cd-rom from it before you fdisk and there is no need to do format C: /s if your boot disk is working properly. Just do Format C:.

Also make sure the bios doesn't have a 33.6 gig limitation - or you will be adding a controller card or using EZ-Bios (UGH).
