Connects, but nothing displayed

Hi Guys,

Thought about posting this in the HW Internet / Networking threads, but it seems to be more of an XP problem.

Client has a Tiny PC (UK company now defunct), it comes with a restore disk (bah), 256MB Ram, Celeron 1200, crappy AMR modem.

Have been trying to setup an ISP account with Tiscali, all goes well everything sets up a treat (also tried a manual setup after registering as well and all is well). The modem dials out and connects to the ISP server , completes verification no problems.

This is where the fun starts, IE will not display ANY pages at all, not google not nothing, but the connection is good and reports an average of 46000 kbps.

I have gone through absoloutly everything I can think of, no virii, no spyware. Even tried a reinstall, added all necessary patches before trying to connect, reset the account details and connection is made no problem, but still no pages display. The OS is XP Home, any thoughts or ideas on this, as it is driving me to distraction.....

Oh occasionally with some URL's it will display DNS lookup failed.

TIA

A few things to try:

1. Reset TCP/IP
Go to command prompt and type
netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt
Reboot
3. Try a winsock Fix
http://members.shaw.ca/techcd/WinsockXPFix.exe

4. Assuming you've scanned, after updating, Spybot or AdAware (or both) and if you haven't run CWShredder, download it from here (link to the download is near the bottom of the page).

It's not TCP/IP.
It's not IP reset.
It's not winsock.
It's DNS server.
Get the primary and secondary DNS numbers from Tiscali, it's on the website for whichever area you're calling from, and put them in the appropriate spot.
Tiscali has excellent web support.
Check out these pages:

Thanks Guys,

As I always reccommend Tiscali to my clients, I have all the support pages printed out and have followed them to the letter.

Any other thoughts?

Cheers

Multiple modems, and/or multiple DNS entries, depending on location.
If you check the connections tab in IE (under tools, options), is there more than one?
Check the hosts file, and make sure there's nothing in it, or if there is, it's only one line with the IP of 127.0.0.1
You could go back to the beginning, remove DUN, remove the modem, restart install the modem, then run "inetwiz" and create a new connection.
Try the winsock fix from here: http://members.shaw.ca/techcd/

According to everything I've read (and tried), Dial-Up Networking cannot be deleted on Windows 2000 and XP but the "netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt" is about as close as you can get to accomplishing the same thing.

Reboot, the link you posted doesn't work for me but is that the same winsock fix I linked to? If not, is it better than, i.e., fix something different than, then LSPfix I linked to on the Shaw site? (I'm always looking for utilities to add to the CD I take with me on jobs).

When connected, try running ipconfig /all and see if the DNS servers are listed. If so, try pinging a site such as "ping www.pcmech.com" and if DNS is working it should return a ping reply with the ip address. If you get an "unkown host" message there is something wrong with DNS.

If this doesn`t work you can try entering 209.68.45.231 in the URL field of your browser and see if it connects you to PC Mech. (most likely not)

Finally, try entering [209.68.45.231 www.pcmech.com] ( no brackets, space between ip address and name) in your host file and try connecting normally with your browser. Your browser checks the host file first, memory second, and then resolves through DNS and may work. At least then you may have isolated the problem to some extent.

Direct download to winsockfix: http://members.shaw.ca/techcd/VB_Pro...WinsockFix.exe
How to remove and reinstall DUN: http://support.microsoft.com/support.../Q181/5/99.ASP

Miz, the file has been moved to a different folder. Same file, different link.
