Smile W98SE over W98SE

Appreciate some help.

To reinstall W98SE over W98SE on a troubled PC, would renaming win.com be a good thing to do on this type of scenario?

The over-the-top reinstalls help the most for system file problems. Hal posted the tip for the reinstall that just refreshes system files just a few days ago [I tend to forget about it, since I haven't tried it yet]. In that case, you don't have to rename anything, you switch to the location of the setup files (if on the cd, something like D:\Win98 - or, if on the hard drive, C:\Windows\Options\Cabs) and type Setup /P F

The regular over-the-top is in that thread in Tips & Tricks: http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.p...threadid=70846

I imagine you've already scanned for viruses and worms: since not every user is careful. . .

Hope it's a quick cure

Thanks for the reply, Gary.

Is the over the top install that refreshes system files the one where you boot with a bootable floppy (or the Windows CD), and from the letter of the CD-ROM drive, key in the command: setup /p f

In this 'Clean Registry Mode' install using the 'f' setup switch, does one need to reinstall drivers or programs?

setup /p f will replace system files. It will leave all programs and data intact.. you won't need to re-install anything.

One more question:

Will a setup /p f 'over the top' Windows install (of Windows Me, for example) overwrite system files so that patches downloaded from http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com have to be downloaded again?

Hal should be able to give you the definitive answer. I know that when doing the full "over-the-top" I usually go to Windows Update and it finds things to update.

My guess would be "probably yes". Besides, in the time it takes to type out an answer like this one, Microsoft has probably posted another Security Update

Sometimes yes.... what its doing is replacing system files that may be corrupt. If a file is replaced during this procedure, then Windows Update will find the update for it... if none of the files are replaced by Windows Update, then none are required.
