Minor problem in 95 to 98SE upgrade...

A friend brought me over his computer with a minor glitch; it's a Sony VIAO P2-233 that he tried to upgrade from WIN95 to W98SE. It seems like he did the upgrade OK, ie, the WIN98SE OS is running, but when Windows is starting up, it says, Windows 95 is now starting......, and then you get the Windows 95 splash screen. However, when the OS loads, it's running WIN98SE. How do we get the WIN98 splash screen to replace the WIN95 splash screen?

If I remember right, the logo splash screen is called Logo.sys. You could try seeing if the old Win95 Logo.sys is still in the C:\ root directory, and delete it if it is still there. Windows98 should be able to use a default splash that it grabs from IO.sys [Never modify IO.sys!].

Or, if he'd like a shot at being creative & making his own splash screen, details are in the link from PC World.

http://www.pcworld.com/howto/article...35,pg,4,00.asp

. . . It does seem likely that something went wrong during the upgrade, since the 98 splash screen should have appeared right away.

Let us know if anything else unusual comes up - or if Logo.sys isn't working.
. . . Gary

Thanks Gary, I'll give it a try.

Update:
I used the "find" command in Windows and was unable to locate the logo.sys file.

Send a message via AIM to cdnref Send a message via MSN to cdnref
Do a manual find. It would be in the C:/Windows directory

Still no luck; I found the file logo.sys in the Windows directory, and even deleted it but I still get the 95 splash screen. btw, there were two other files in the Windows directory, logow.sys and logo1.sys, and I deleted both of those too.

Also, there is still a WIN95 directory; can I delete this entire directory with no ill effects?

Lawman, why didn't he just do a fresh install? Even with an "upgrade" it only asks for proof of a prior usage - that's when I pop in a few Win 3.1 floppies. His copy of Win95 is probably on a recovery disk which I never could get the upgrade to recognize, even after reformatting, etc. If the splash screen is all that's bugging him and all else works fine though, ...

I don't remember for sure.. but it seems to me that if you boot from a Win98 boot disk, then SYS C:, it will update it.

OK, thanks all, I'll check into it some more. This is on a Sony Vaio and I don't have the original install disk, ie, I don't want to spend a lot of time on it.

Hal, I'll follow up on your suggestion.

SARGE, Mrs. LawyerRon has me waxing her hardwood floors right now (been doing that since 9:00 this morning), so I'm not feeling too ambitious right now.

Hope that Hal's suggestion gets you going. Strange that nothing showed up in the root directory. [especially since you seem to have the folder view set to "Show all files" & have unchecked the "Hide extentions of known file types" (since you could see Logo.sys in the Windows folder)]

If you did a straight upgrade install, the Win95 directory is probably there for going back to (if you wanted to uninstall Win98)

Curious! . . . Gary

[....Vaio's do seem to have their own personalities . . . any chance that the 1st of the 2 splash screens is a Bios splash screen from the Sony bios? Probably not, but you could check real quick in the Bios setup screens for a logo item]

That's very possible Gary, this Sony splashes its Sony logo before the Windows splash screen. I'll check the bios as you suggested.

Hi LawyerRon,

I don't know if this will help or not, but here goes. I'm still using Win95 myself, and the only "logo" files I find are logos.sys and logow.sys in the C:\windows directory and a hidden file called logo.sys in the C:\ root directory. As I said though, the logo.sys was hidden, so to show it I had to type dir/a logo.sys at the C:\ prompt (in DOS mode). I don't seem to have the logo1.sys file you said you found in the windows directory though. Don't know whether that's something that's been renamed or what, or for that matter what happened to the original logos.sys file. Anyway, thought it might help you to know what logo.sys files are installed on a Win95 machine that hasn't had an attempted upgrade to another OS.
