Hi there everyone!
I recently have built my own computer but have been having this horrrrrriiible problem. First let me give specs: ---- Athlon XP 2400+ Speeeeeeeze Cooling Fan 256 MB RAM Radeon 8500 V400 Mach Speed Motherboard Maxtor 20GB HD DVD-ROM and CD-RW drive ---- When I start up the computer, I have it set to load CD-ROM first (it checks both drives). I have my win2k CD in the drive and it loads setup. It then begins loading all the components, and then at the bottom says "Setting up Windows 2000". Then the computer suddenly shuts down after a few seconds and makes a continuous sound that goes from low to high, low to high over and over again until I turn off the power for about 3 seconds. Sometimes it doesnt do this, usually when I clear the CMOS or something like that. I made it as far as to the 99.9999% bar once and then it shut down like this. But I got into windows OK and it was setting everything up.. then BAM! It does it again halfway through. My CPU temp is OK I think ~129 F, but it does it even at a cooler temp. Please help me out! I feel really bad I can't use that computer .

Look in BIOS and see what you have the alarm and shutdown temps set to. You may have them too low. I usually set mine to warn at 65C and to shut down at 70C

OK thanks alot I am at school right now, but I will try this when I get home.
But I got one question: The alarm noises are caused by exceeding temp settings in the bios? BTW: It might go high to low, low to high, hight to low, but I am not exactly sure Thanks for the help will tell results after I get home. |

Modern mobo have temp sensors and can be set to shut down if temps exceed a predetermined point. This is to protect your PC in case of fan failure, ect.
There are two settings. One is to sound a alarm when temp reaches BIOS setting and other is to automatically shut down if temps continue to rise and reach the second setting. If yours are set too low it could be the cause of your problem. Chas |

These are the results I got:
Installed Win2k fine with no shutdown followed by alarm. Installed drivers and everything. Did windows update and it shut down with alarm noise in the middle. I then proceeded to try to play a game and it shut down with the alarm noise .Are there any other possible fixes you can think of? I have a mach speed v400 MoBo. Please help me out |

Well I set the shutdown temp to 65 and then 70 and it still happened. I don't think there is a warning temp on mine.

set the shutdown temp to 75 all so is the cpu a retale one that came with a heatsync and fan or oem and you got a heatsync from a shop. if its oem try and get a better heatsync and fan one rated for a xp3200 cpu at least. if you can as a test try runing the computer with the case sides off and place a desk top fan blowing cold air in to it.
