HP expanding possiablities! help~
hello~
my friend just gave me his old HP pavilion 6648C... well it had windows 98 on it...but i wanted to install xp (for the family ) ... so tried to install it with putting the xp disc and restarting with the disc...deleting the old stuff and installing a fresh xp on it... well for some reason the computer wound't let me do this...so i took the HD out and installed it using my computer... Now, the HD has xp one it....i put it back into the HP and booted the computer.... I get the HP starting screen but after that i get a black screen with a cursor flashing at the top...and doesn't do anything... after this i thought maybe something went wrong with the HD, so i tested with my computer and it works well....xp in installed on there.... so the problem now is to get it to work with the HP machine, i guess the computer is not reading the HD? you guys know whats going on and how i can get it to work ? -thanks cylis ~ |

i am not positive, but i think xp has some type of hardware recognition so that you cannot install the os and then move it to another computer. some people have said that it works, but i myself have never seen it done. i have just heard it does not work. sorry i can't help you fix the problem, but that may explain it.

If your friend has the Recovery Disk set that came with the Pavilion, you'll want to run it for a full reformat/restore and return that machine to Windows 98.
A k6-2 really isn't going to run XP well at all. And if that Pavilion still has just the original 64mb of RAM - Win98 will run Ok, XP will not. If you can't track down the Recovery Disks, Hp will send out copies for about $20. Or if you have an extra licensed version of Win98, you can download all the drivers from the Hp site & go that route. Best of luck . . . Gary [hobey might be referring to the "Product Activation" - which shouldn't be a problem until an install has completed, since there is a grace period. Product Activation will shutdown the machine if it's not registered/activated in 30days [I think it's 30 days, it's been a while since I installed XP]. |
