hp6623

Hello, I not sure if this is the correct place to post my problem but here it goes.
I have an old 2'nd pc HP6623 and use it for home bills, notes, etc. About a month ago we had a power outage in our area and since then when I turn the pc on it tries to run then in about 15 seconds it just shuts down on it's own now even giving the monitor a chance to fire up.
I have some knoledge with computers but this has me messed up. I just need a starting point on what to check.
The hard drive-mobo-chip-or whatever besides the dumpster of course.
thank you.sfuhrman

Quick Try #1) if the lights on the keyboard flash briefly in that 1st 15 seconds, immediately after you see that, press F1 - wait a heartbeat or two - then press F5 - another few heartbeats - then F10. You won't see anything when pressing the keys, but if you are lucky, you will see a boot screen at the end.

Quick Try #2) [this assumes #1 didn't work]... unplug the power cord, open the case, and locate the bios battery on the motherboard (the layout of your board is in the 2nd link I posted below). Remove the battery for 15 minutes, then place it back in. Leave the case open, but replug the power cord and see if it will boot, or at least display the power-on-self-test (POST) on your monitor. ---> Sometimes the surge following a power out will jumble the bios settings pretty much. Both of these quick tries are efforts to let the system startup with it's "Fail-Safe Default" bios settings.

If nothing starts or displays: do you hear any beeps? (to hear only one brief beep at startup means that the POST has finished successfully ---> any other combination of beeps signals hardware trouble: tell us what pattern of beeps you hear = if you hear any at all)

If you hear nothing, and no fans seem to spin, and no hard drives sound like they are starting, you can try things out-of-the-case for troubleshooting. Hal has a guide in the Tips & Tricks forum for this. It works for ruling out basic failures on systems both newly built and ancient-built http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.p...threadid=12753

Here's a diagram of your motherboard from the Hp site (nice motherboard: an Asus)

Here are the product specs for your model:

Might throw some salt over a shoulder first, or have a shamrock handy.

Once you get it up and running, you might consider buying a UPS (uninterruptible power supply). Decent ones can be had for $40 or so and they're the cheapest insurance you can get.

I bought a Tripplite in 1995 and it's still going strong. APC and Belkin are other brands I'm familiar with and neither of those have had problems either.

Well it was worth the try but, it still does the same thing. the pc starts and just shuts off on it's own in 10 to 15 seconds and it won't even give me a chance to do the f1-f5-f10. I never seen this before. If you have any more ideas please pass them on.
thank you sfuhrman

Well, if you don't hear any beeps (you should hear at least one beep) and nothing makes it to your screen, try the out-of-the-case troubleshooting thread.

(did you remove/replace the battery yet?)

The troubleshooting list will take a while = set aside a good half-hour or so. . . (it's that 1st link in my first reply)
