Question Need help sorting LARGE image folder

I recently formatted my HD by mistake.

So i used Easy Recovery Data Recovery to try to recover the lost files.

I used the RAW FILES option, it basically recovers files based on thier extension.

So all jpgs where in one folder, all exe were in one and so on.

The JPG folder contains 28,988 images

Most were "temporary internet images".

The problem is tryin to browse thru them. It takes SO long because they are all in one folder. Even though i have 512 PC2700 ram and AMD 2000 XP +.

Is there any command or batch file i can write that will automatically sort for example every 100 or 200 images into one folder?

Just because it takes SO LONG for the images to load coz im viewing it in thumbnail mod. I gotta see what the image is to begin sorting photography files into photography folder, friends pics into friends folder...

thanks !

Any suggestions would be highly appreciated.

ohh yah, that large folder is on a 120 Gb SaTa drive..so im assumin and hopin the ATA/150 and 7400 RPM w/ 8mb cache will come into play...

What I've done in the past is set the View to Details, click on the first file. Page down a few times. Hold the shift key and click on another file to Select all files from the first one. And then move them into a folder you've already created before hand. Repeat as necessary.

How many times you Page down will depend on how many files you want to move at a time. I like to move only a couple of hundred files at a time as it seems to be the fastest way. Make as many folders as you need, like maybe 28 or 29 if you want each new folder to hold about a 1,000 files.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ or, if you want more of an (semi)-automated way:
Do you have enough CD-RWs to hold all that? If so, use the XCOPY command using the /m /s /e switchs. First, though, you need to set the Archive flag to on, if not already done (and most likely, it's done already).
Make your Target destination your CD burner, and run the command. I could look like:
xcopy source:\TheDirectoryWhereTheJpegsAre\*.* DestinationIsCDburner\newFolder /m /s /e
That will copy the file over to the burner until it is full, then give an error message. Put in another blank but formated CD-RW and run the command again. Repeat as necessary....
When all files are copied to the CDs, then put the contents of each CD into it's own folder.
This method does take considerable more time, but then they would be backed up in case something else goes wrong...
