old games challenge ;-)

hi,
i'm trying to install an old game that my dad likes to play on his pc (i think it's a 800 mhz, but it has 384mb ram) annyway it's win98SE
the game has run on this pc before so the system specs should suffice.
the game is called "kart challenge 99"
when i've installed it, as wel as teh directx6.1 that was on the cd, but when i try to start it a window opens briefly and the disapears.

what can i do?????

*edit: i've installed directx9.0 and now i get up to the point where the actal game starts, i select training session, it starts to load and tehn the game shuts down and i am looking at my desktop again arrrrrg*
