Try reinstalling your NIC card drivers, and then see if it lets you view the connection properties.

Your NIC is your network card. I'm assuming that since you have a firewall running you are on a cable or dsl connection? The NIC would be the card that your cable plugs into that goes to your cable or dsl modem.

Anyway, try reinstalling the software for the network card, or figuring out what card you have and updating that software.

Do you have an off-the-shelf computer or a home-built computer? If its off the shelf, what is the brand and model number?

can you press ctrl alt deleate and list all the runing proceses for me all so do a full antvirus scan and a scan with spybot or add aware
to update your nec card driver open device manager and highlight the nec card and rightclick and select update driver then have the wizard search the folder you unziped for the updated driver
if that dont work boot the computer from you winxp cd and chose the setup option on the first screan and then the repair option on the second

my one main concern is you may have a trojan virus or back door key loger or you have bean hacked so first try the repair then download and install a free firewall like zone allarm or seygate and then we can start to see whats stoping winxp firewall from working

First let me thank you for your efforts to try to solve this for me.

I don't think it's a virus because I have a {Norton Corporate Edition}and a Zone alarm pro, no viruses found.I also have spy bot and it shows nothing. It's a real mystery and I wont give up till I find the problem. Thanks for your help so far
