I cannot find the Windows backup utility. I cannot find it by searching and I cannot find it on the Windows XP Home CD. Where is it? Can I download it?

To install the Backup utility manually since it doesn't install by default in the Home version:

1. Insert the Windows XP Home Edition CD.
2. Click "Perform additional tasks"
3. Navigate to the VALUEADD\MSFT\NTBACKUP folder.
4. Double-click the ntbackup.msi file.

Or just open Windows Explorer after inserting the XP CD and closing the splash screen it opens and browse the CD to the folder in step 3, then execute the file in step 4.

Mine installed automatically. Start > Accessories > System Tools >

Under XP Home the backup utility is called system restore.
Start > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore

Now I'm confused. Though system restore has saved my butt many times. It does not back things up into a files that I can put on a CD so I can reformat and start over. I will look on the CD again.

NO! System restore is NOT the same as the backup utility.

I'm running XP Pro and backup is under accessories>system tools. If it did not install on setup, you'll have to go back and install it from the cd.

Be forewarned...XP's backup utility uses compression and ends up with one file to burn to the CD. It doesn't support burning directly to the CD so you have to designate a folder somewhere on a harddrive to back up to, then burn that to a CD.

You might want to consider backing your data up onto a CD in their original formats. Much easier to find what you're looking for if you just need to view one or two files and it avoids the possibility of that one backup file being corrupted in some manner so that none of it is retrievable.

I use Karen's Replicator, which is free. Set it up once to back up the files/folders with your data in it and then either run it manually or set it to run at scheduled times.
