ok,I tried a USB mouse and it didn't work because the ps/2 port and usb ports are on the same little card that you plug in into the mobo.I'll try a serial mouse shortly

It is possible the card is bad. Also be aware that you may need a pure PS2 mouse and not one that is a USB Mouse that has a PS2 adapter as they are not the same.

From Microsoft
Mouse May Not Work After Installing Windows 2000
View products that this article applies to.
This article was previously published under Q214632
SYMPTOMS
After you install Windows 2000, or upgrade from Microsoft Windows 95, Microsoft Windows 98, or Microsoft Windows NT 4.0, your bus or InPort mouse does not work.
CAUSE
Windows 2000 does not support the bus or InPort mouse.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

InPort Mouse =The mse driver provides support for the bus mouse and the InPort mouse, which are often collectively called ‘‘bus’’ mice, as these mice are sold with an interface card which needs to be installed in an expansion bus slot. The interface circuit may come on an integrated I/O card or as an option on video cards.

You may need to find a manufacture specific driver for the card and/or the mouse.

Does the card show in the Device manager? USB Root Hubs are automatically detected so the USB ports will work.
