i'm not sure where this should go, the windows section or hardware or whatever, but when i start up my computer, a little popup comes up with "Start.bmp not found" and i have to click OK, but nothing is wrong with my computer. i can still get on the net (obviously) and i can still play games. just that stupid little annoying popup comes up every single time

Should probably be under the appropriate OS forum... which OS?

You can try MSCONFIG first and look for an entry that would have START.BMP in it and uncheck it... if not there.. do a search in the registry for it. Word of advice tho.. whatever you delete there, export it first so you can add it back easily if it turns out to be something important.

The Start.bmp file that is missing is just the startup screen picture. You can easily cure that problem by renaming one of you current .bmp files in Windows to Start. You will then see that picture instead of the usual start up picture.

No need to re-install, just get a pic the has the windows logo on it resize it to 800x600 and save it as Start.bmp. There thats it. No re-install of any kind.

MrJack - is all well?
If you weren't able to find anything in msconfig, and trying re-creating a Start.bmp file hasn't helped - be sure in anycase to run a full system antivirus scan & some antispyware tools (like AdAware or Search&Destroy -http://www.spywareinfo.com has links) --->especially if you did nothing to remove any files just prior to your error message. If you see the usual Windows98 logo at startup, you'll know that's not what's missing (it's usually contained in the Logo.sys file, which is a hidden system file) - Some computers have customized splash screens for other things, though, and some appear well after the Win98 logo screen. These can be called whatever the program that starts them wants to. So if you suspect that an incomplete uninstall of a program might have caused this problem, you could run RegClean to see if it removes the reference. It's quick, painless, easy, and it has an UnDo file. [http://download.com.com/3000-2094-88...ml?tag=lst-0-1 ....details in how to use it are in the ReadMe.txt file] If it is the Win98 logo screen that's not showing up, LawyerRon had a similiar logo problem after a Win95-to-Win98 upgrade, and Hal's tip was to boot with a Win98 bootdisk (of the same version) and type SYS C: from the command prompt. If that describes your situation, you can try that. You'll want to visit Windows update after that to download any Security Updates as necessary. Best of luck . . . Gary |

yeah gary, everythings fine, thanks for asking. i don't notice anything wrong with my computer, aside form the little popup that comes upon startup.
also, hal, when i opened MSCONFIG, config.sys and autoexec.bat have a whole lot of empty lines. how would i rename a .bmp file? i tried to rename it through the display properties, i'll try to change it through my computer and through the HDD, tell me if this is not what to do |

You can rename a bitmap file with Windows Explorer or when exploring in My Computer, by right-clicking on the file and selecting Rename from the dialog box.
Curious to see what program is asking for it's startup screen. --- do you see the Win98 logo screen OK at boot? [and then this popup Start.bmp message?] ... if it's after the Win98 logo screen, seems like something listed in Startup should be calling it. You could look in Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Information and click on the plus (+) sign next to Software Environment, and then select Startup. The list on the right has a column that reads "Called From" which tells exactly where the program is staring from. If you find the culprit, I'd be interested to hear who it turned out to be. . . . Sorry, I didn't mean to say you'd see Start.bmp listed. You'll just see a list of programs and services, one of which is asking for that file. You can tell where each of those programs are starting from by looking at that "called from" column. (and you have the option to temporarily stop them in msconfig while troubleshooting)
I'm still curious if you see the normal splash screen just before you get to the odd popup that's lonesome for its bitmap. Of course, this is somewhat Much Ado About Nothing in that nothing is all that broken = but I'm a chronic, non-rehabbed perfectionist! Wake me up at the PC-perfectionist's crises center with another post if you chance upon a trail leading to the AWOL Start.bmp . . . Gary |

try msconfig and stop all the start up programs then reboot and enable one program at a time till you get the error
or click start run regedit and search the registry for start.bmp and tell us what you find dot delete any thing till you post your reply

You might win the most background jobs at startup contest. Net.net is sometimes regarded as spyware, and is installed as part of the Kazaa media desktop.
My guess is it's the Internet Answering machines splash that's Start.bmp - since it loads paint.exe (which would want a .bmp to display). You could stop that one first in your msconfig troubleshooting (you can proceed just as andy advised). If you want to see what all those programs are doing at startup (much of it is for your Yahoo & sbc broadband) - you can visit PacsPortal for a good introduction to what you need and what you don't [for example, it's not really necessary to have QuickTime running always and forever from startup to shutdown] - http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_index.htm If it is indeed the Internet Answering Machine, uninstalling and then reinstalling it would probably restore it's start.bmp - you could poke around in that program's Help files for clues. Looks like you're almost there. . . . Gary & hi andy |
