Intermittent sluggish performance..why?!

Hey all,

Since I did a clean install of XP Home onto a formatted hard drive last week, I've been having a strange problem.

There seems to be something slowing my computer right down - to such an extent that mouse movement is sluggish, and the machine can't even keep up with what I'm typing right now.

It appears to be something to do with the internet - it connects my computer automatically when I start up, and seems to be constantly uploading data, using up my whole bandwidth.

Adaware, my virus scanner and another spyware checker don't find anything, and they are all up to date.

Having looked at the task manager, the only thing that seems to be doing anything is "System Idle Process" at the bottom of the list - with the figure in the CPU column constantly up in the nineties

Even stranger, the problem disappears every now and then, and can be gone for an hour or two, then starts again!

Anyone got any ideas what the hell is going on?!

Any suggestions would be appreciated

Get and run CoolWebShredder.

And take a look at Black Viper's web site for some help with Windows Services.

That hasn't helped I'm afraid. Can find nothing about thie "System Idle Process" that's using a LOT of system resources!

Anyone else got a clue?

Just did a google seach of System Idle Process and several people have noticed a high percentage number. That simply means the % of IDLE system resources. If you are experiencing slow reaction of key strokes and mouse movements, those that reported that problem were suggested to update their video/graphics driver. Have you tried updating yours?

I only did a fresh install of XP last week, and so my drivers are the latest available from the Nvidia website!

Ok, from what I've read on the web so far, System Idle Process is all normal.

What isn't normal is this upload of data - the system has uploaded 30mb in the past few hours! Why?!

HELP ME! ARG!

I know you said you ran your virus scanner, but maybe a visit to Housecall is in order. It's a free virus scan. Here's a link:

You might want to do a scan for Trojans with something like SwatIt or The Cleaner.
