Fatal error even after format

My sons boss has given me a computer to fix. It had 98 installed on it but just kept coming up with the message Fatal exception error has occurred and would shut down.
I formatted the hard drive and reinstalled Windows 98se on it and I am still getting the same problem, it runs for a little while a few minutes and then up comes the message. Fatal exception error has occurred at 0617:BFF9DFFF. I have run Belarc and the mobo is Sis530-6801
and an AMD-K6 3D 400Mhz processor.
32Mbytes of RAM.

I am told that it use to work just fine although I think its a bit low on RAM myself.although I have run on 32 mbytes of RAM on another computer quite successfully.even so, would that cause this problem. I dont lose the picture just get the BSOD

I haven't opened the case up yet thought I would wait for some advice from you guys. although I think about the only thing I could do would be to check that the RAM module is securely installed and the fan is working.I have only the bare hardware installed, nothing else not even a printer, just the keyboard, mouse and monitor.
seems strange that it is still doing the same thing after formatting the hard drive and with a new version of Windows in it.any ideas guys. I need some help pretty quick on this one.

Since you re-installed and are only working with bare essentials, I am inclined to think that it's either bad RAM or a heated CPU. Try approaching the RAM first.

Thanks bonzai, I took your advice and checked the RAM module and the CPU fan and found that the fan is not working, is the fan supposed to spin all the time or just when the CPU heats up.stupid question I know but I have never thought about it before. This fan doesn't seem to work at any time.
The computer seems to work just fine with the case off, so overheating is probably the problem .

The CPU heatsink fan should spin constantly when the computer is on. Looks like you have to replace it.
