Help installing win 2k Advanced Server for dual boot
Hi
I am developing a dynamic web site which will run on 2 clustered windows 2000 advanced servers. I want to test this in the design enviroment on my machine which will require me to install windows 2000 advanced server as a dual boot with my existing windows xp pro setup. I have 2 hard disks, 1x 40GB disk which is partioned into 2 basic partitions, one partion being used for windows xp system files. The second hard disk is an 80GB with a formatted dynamic partition which is used for files - this is the disk I want to partition to allow for the install of 2k advanced server. How do I do this without deleting existing data? Also when trying to resize or create a new partition on the 80Gb disk it states "The selected disk contains one or more partitions that cannot be moved" Please see attached image of my disk setup. Thanks NW |

If you need to repartition, use PartitionMagic.

In order to have a dual boot configuration with Windows XP/2000, you need to be using basic disks. You can revert your dynamic disk to a basic disk, but the bad news is that you will need to back up all the data on that disk first, because the reversion process will not preserve the data. Once you have reverted the dynamic disk to basic, you will be able to partition it, install the Win2k OS, and restore your data from backup media. I'm not sure exactly what (if anything) you will need to edit in the boot.ini to allow booting of either operating system. Windows OS's are pretty good about taking care of that automatically, if you install the newer OS last. But since you already have the XP installed before installing Win2k, I'm not sure if it will see the WinXP OS or not.
