Foldin' For PCMech!
|
i had a problem with my computer the other day. my sister was on it and an erro poped up (she didn't know what it was so she clicked 'ok') the computer shut down and never restarted. it would get to the windows 98 page and freeze. i put the recovery cd in and recovered the major files and it works now. the only problem is that like for exapmle. i have AIM Messenger. everytime i restart the machine it acts like i have just installed AIM, asking for user name and all. a few other programs also do this. (seti, virus scan, internet connection wizard, etc.) anyone have any ideas on this?

This sounds like a major brand computer - is it a Compaq/Hp, Dell, IBM, Gateway, etc? If so, what model?
Different series have different Recovery disks. Some completely reformat the drive & reinstall from scratch (you lose all data entered since purchase). Others draw from a hidden partition for some more recent data. Still others only restore what you want from a list: drivers, programs, or operating system. Post the make/model if you have that info. I won't be able to check back in for a while (probably mid-day tomorrow - though most likely other techs will see your post & be able to help), but if you want to try something in the meantime: 1) Completely uninstall/reinstall those programs that are giving you the unwanted setup prompts [This assumes you have the disks or options to reinstall!] Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel should do. Might want to manually remove any leftovers from incomplete uninstalls. You can run RegClean in between to clear up any loose ends. http://download.com.com/3000-2094-88...ml?tag=lst-0-1 ...details of how to use it are in the ReadMe.txt file. 2) You can't use Add/Remove to end the Connection Wizard, though. For that, once you completely set up all your different connections, it should disappear. Best of luck . . . Gary |

ok well i have an HP Pavilion Desktop 6553 the recovery disk has 2 options. format and recover or just recover. format and recover wipes the HDD and reloads everything, while recover doesn't wipe the HDD, it just loads the software. i only recovered it. i have had to do this a few times before and never had any problems with it.

the macafee website has a free online scanner that you can run, and if it detects anything, it will tell you how to remove it...or you can install http://www.my-etrust.com/microsoft/index.cfm? brought to you free by microsoft....It is antivirus and firewall....
