I am working on installing XP Corp on a new machine and I have never had any problems before (done this install many times) but for some reason whenever I boot from cd now to do the install I get this error about either corrupt or missing "mountmgr.sys"
I don't know what this is let alone how to get past it. I know that my cd drive isn't bad and I know that my cd isn't bad. But I don't know why I keep getting an error. Please help!

Try replacing the IDE cable on the hard drive and the CD-ROM drive.

if I just try and swap them, would that be enough?
I don't have any spares lying around. |

You shouldn't keep a Hard drive on the second IDE channel..always keep it on the Primary IDE channel.

Swap them? You mean take the one from the primary channel and use it on the secondary channel? Or do you mean swap the cables from another computer?
Have you gone to the hard drive manufacturer's website and downloaded the diagnostic utility to test the drive with yet? Oh, have you checked to see if the WinXP CD is dirty or scratched? Cricket

a littel information on the system would be helpful.
sence this is a fresh install, and you don't have any data on the drive yet, why not do a format and start over. and is the xp cd a copy or the oringnal |

well...I swapped the cables (hd is on primary IDE and cd is on secondary) but that didn't solve the problem of having a corrupt mountmgr.sys file
I don't know how to format the HD without the disk and there is no floppy drive on the machine. |

XP cd is backup of the original
I don't keep original copies of any of my cd's at school (too much to risk) So I guess what I am saying is that I still don't have a clue what to do. Last edited by CSC2100; 11-19-2003 at 12:21 AM. |

simplest thing to do is format the drive and start over
you can fdisk it you can use partition magic and delete the partition boot with a flopy to do the above you can try the orginal cd too sometimes a copy can have problem in some cdrw drives sence when does a school get the corp edition of xp-pro |

There isnt any difference between the functionality of Pro and Corp. Hope you realize the ramifications of piracy when you activate XP (of course if your friend isnt using a computer that was installed by this copy of XP then u wouldnt have problems).

no...you didn't understand me. I didn't have a pirated copy of anything. I am simply don't have a cd copy here of my normal XP Pro, but I have my key for my copy. So I had to use my roommate's cd and I used my LEGAL key. I will have no problems with M$ piracy detection because I have done nothing wrong.
I just can't figure out why I wasn't able to install Corp, but Pro installed without any problems. But thank you for your concern. |

the copy of the corp is more that likely a bad copy, best thing to do is trash it before it causes any more problems.

thing that gets me is that I have used that same cd copy numerous times on other PCs and had no problems. Could the cause of the problem mainly stem from the fact that I was using a burner as a my cd-rom to install it with?
I can't say for sure if that is what I used to install in the past. |
