Exclamation WIN98 SE Desktop Won't Load!!

I was on my computer today and she froze up, so i ctrl alt del and she restarted. But the next time i rebooted, when the win98se desktop appears, a whole bunch of explorer illegal operation windows keep popping up. I read the details and each one said it was caused by SHDOCVW.DLL. After I finish closing the windows out, the desktop remains blank and nothing loads. What is the cause of this problem and how can i fix it?

Could this be a corrupted SHDOCVW.DLL File and will using a ESD and replacing it with original dll file fix this? If not what will?

Quick fix try: run a repair install of IE.

There are a couple of viruses that can cause this error also: so be sure to run a full system antivirus scan with updated definitions as soon as you can.

If it's not a virus, Microsoft has a few ways to get a fresh copy into your system files in their Knowledge Base article http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=249191

To figure out what caused the corruption in the first place, you might want to test what hardware you can: run diagnostics on the hard drive and memory. If you suspect a power surge may have damaged things, http://www.simmtester.com has a memory tester. The website of your harddrive manufacturer will have a diagnostic program available to download. SiSoft Sandra can run test on several system components http://www.sisoftware.co.uk [and if you have a Compaq, the Compaq Diagnostics have several areas of hardware they can test --same is true for many other OEMs as well]

Best of luck

Nice work. Did the odd-version dlls arrive via new software?

Im not sure how the hell those dll files ended up being incorrect version. It never happened after installing new software, it happened after attempting to burn a cd off with Adaptec/Roxio Direct CD 5. That program crashed, caused illegal operation, then after that, whole computer froze up. I restarted and the desktop wouldn't load.

Sounds like the files might have been in use & got corrupted when things crashed.

Glad it's OK now. [. . . of course, now the question is = what will happen if you try DirectCD again? If you get the illegal operation message again, and it offers "Details", pop another message here & we might be able to post a repair for other folks getting the same thing . . . ]

Yeah now heres another pain in the ass. Everytime i put a blank cd-r in my burner, the comp freezes and i has to restart. I downloaded another burning program called Nero and that dosen't work with the cd-r either. But, get this. I can play a game thru the burner drive, and i can read and write to a cd-rw. I get this blue screen sometimes after i pop in a cd-r saying somethin bout voltrack4.vxd and s???ide.vxd i dunno what the heck is going on. any ideas on what this could be all about?

Usually Nero and Roxio don't get along well. . . especially when DirectCD is running. I can't remember Nero's program like DirectCD - (perhaps it's InCD?) = but those two definitely wouldn't want to be running at the same time.

I haven't followed the trials and tribulations of DirectCd and InCD much, since I don't use them (though I use both Nero - on my Win98 machines - and Roxio - on my Win2k machines = I just use the regular recorder component). But I seem to remember that they add their own driver for the cd-drives, and when that's not a happy camper, the drive becomes a little two year old with tantrums.

Your best bet might be to completely uninstall both as best you can - there are some specialized cleanup routines if you check on the Nero and Roxio websites (since the uninstallers often don't quite get the job done). I also recommend RegClean a lot (for Win95/98/98se) to help clean up loose ends before reinstalling. You can download RegClean 4.1 (the version updated for Win98/98se) - http://download.com.com/3000-2094-88...ml?tag=lst-0-1 The instructions on how to use it are in the ReadMe.txt file.

Then you get to choose which one you like best. If you go back to Roxio, you might want to install it's update patches after you reinstall the main program. The patches are available from the Roxio website. If you choose Nero, it shouldn't need much patching, unless you upgrade your burner.

Best of luck, let me know how it comes out, or if you have more questions
. . . Gary

I realize this thread was started a really long time ago, but I just wanted to post a reply of my own since I just had exactly the same problem as shawn316 had on my g/f's 98se system, and your link really helped, Gary! ...I know it's just a MS Knowledge Base article, but I had gone to the MS support site first, and it didn't produce this link within my search... So I'm glad to have found it here!

Thanks again, PCMech!!

Glad it helped. Windows 98, especially 2nd Edition, has been showing a lot a staying power - quite a few of the older machines are still running it. So those old repairs still come in handy once and a while.

Funny thing is, if too much time goes by, I forget the repair myself & have to research it all over again!
