Windows ME wont start
When I try to start my computer it tells me that a required file is currupted, this is the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VMM32.VXP file and I cannot get out of MSDOS mode. Whenever I try it says whatevery I type is currupted and won't work. Is there anyway I can do a system restore?

Microsoft, read the whole article...it mentions some fixes, but it looks like a reinstall is the best fix.

Did you add any hardware recently? There are a few that can produce the error.
Scanner driver conflict (UMAX & Genius): http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=191874 If no new hardware, there's the article Roger posted, as well as a somewhat lengthy technical discussion in a Infinisource Technical Background article: http://www.infinisource.com/techfiles/vmm32.html . . . if you could make it into Safe Mode, yes, you could run System Restore from there. But I've heard that often with this error getting to Safe Mode isn't possible. To give it a try: press/tap the F8 key while the computer is starting - if you make it to the boot menu, select Safe Mode. . . . if none of those repairs help, one of the faster reinstall repairs would be to try booting with your WinME CD "start computer with CD-rom support", and from the drive letter of your installation CD, type "Setup /p f" [without the quotes, but be sure to put in the spaces]. Best of luck . . . Gary |
