Dual Boot
I'm planning on installing another HD into my system, so I can
install Linux Red Hat 9. I have Windows 2000 Professional on the first HD, and when I add in the 2nd HD, I am going to put Linux Red Hat 9. So I will have two hard drives. If I install Linux onto the other HD, will I have ANY problems dual botting between Windows 2000 Professional and Linux Red Hat? Now, whats this I hear about going into the BIOS and changing the boot order to which over OS you want to boot. I don't want to do that. TIA. Another question. In the Linux Red Hat setup, in the automatic partition, it allows me to remove all partitions, remove only Linux partitions, and keeep all partitions and create with free space. And at the bottom, it will pick which HD I want to make the partition. Would I choose the 2nd HD and take the 3rd option(Leave partitions and install to Free Space) or how would I do this? Or would I need to run Disk Druid for this? ALSO, is it best to unplug the master HD, and just make the 2nd HD master, and then install Linux and then switch it to Master HD that has WIN 2K and the Slave that has Redhat? Just an addition..decided to make a new post..so it isn't a long post..I heard that if you install a second HD onto the primary IDE controller, and the HD is the same speed as the first HD(Meaning both are ATA100), but one is 7200 rpm and the other one is 5400 rpm, will it cause any performance issues beteween both drives?

No drive performance issues. Old wives tale of confusion between HDD speeds and ATA speeds (like 66, 100, 133). I asked the same question a few months back cuz a cooworker believed the slower speed hdd would slow down the faster one. Not true.
I'm running a dual boot system with XP on a 7200 rpm and 98se on a 5400. The 98 was originally on a 7200, but I wanted that hdd for my new system and had acquired the 5400, 80Gb for free. Someone on another forum clued me in to an easy way to switch between OS's. My P4PE/L mobo has a feature that during boot when the splash screen shows I hold the Escape key and it displays boot options just like in bios. I can then use up/down arrows to select boot preference and hit Enter. Kinda slick! |

I just want the traditional, boot into a menu and pick which OS you want to load. How about the question that I asked about Linux partitioning? Anybody have a clue?

leave the new drive with free space, it will install red hat automatically to the free space on that drive, it will detect that there is no linux partitions to delete.
and in the install process lilo will also be installed and you will get the boot menue when systems starts. should be problem free to do what you are doing. I have dual boot with xp-pro and red hat, ver. 9.0. works fine that way |
